Bearing masses of petite daisy-like yellow flowers on tight green foliage, Sanvitalia, commonly known as Creeping Zinnia, is an appealing compact plant growing to around 25 x 35cm. It is heat and dry tolerant and will flower continuously from spring through to autumn. In hot, humid northern climates it will flower best during winter and spring.
The neat habit and profuse flowering of Sanvitalia Superbini make it excellent for container planting. It is ideal for bowls and baskets or spilling over the sides of mixed plantings in large pots in courtyards and patios. It is also suited to border planting around a garden or edging a pathway.
Sanvitalia Superbini loves sun and light, but will also grow in part shade. This is a tough little plant that likes hot, dry conditions and resents overwatering. It will thrive in poor soil, and needs little fertiliser. Avoid root disturbance when replanting and allow some space around the plant for good air movement. Trim back after flowering by about one-third.
Sanvitalia are native to the south western United States and Mexico where they grow as ground cover plants. Breeding has produced the selection Superbini.
