AZALEA 'MINITASTIC'
Azalea indica 'Minitastic' will provide foliage interest and colour
contrast for courtyards, patios and gardens in most locations around
the country. With its small leaves and compact growth, 'Minitastic'
always looks good. Unlike nearly all other azaleas, 'Minitastic' is
grown for its foliage rather than its flowers. The fashionable plum
coloured leaves never change colour all year long and new growth is
always the best coloured foliage. Minitastic is protected by PBR.
‘Minitastic’
forms a compact, dense plant with a small leaf. It grows to
around 60 x 60cm.
• Great contrast amongst other plants
• Plum foliage - compact growth
• Courtyard pots or gardens in sun or light shade
Origin
Azalea indica and its varieties are native to China and Japan.
Azalea ‘Minitastic’
was developed from a sport found on Azalea ‘Plumtastic’
in the azalea growing fields at Redlands Nursery in Queensland.
Bred in the USA from unknown parentage and released in Australia
in 2002, ‘Plumtastic’ grows to around 1.2m tall.
Care Instructions
When planting ‘Minitastic’
into pots use a top quality Azalea potting mix. Water plant
in well and keep the soil moist, never allowing it to dry out
completely. ‘Minitastic’A grows well in full sunlight
or moderate shade. Best foliage colour is seen in full sun.
In the garden dig individual holes for each plant about 50
cm across and increase soil acidity and moisture holding capacity,
but ensure drainage is good. Water in the plant and during dry
spells water thoroughly every 7-10 days. Use mulch about 5cm
thick to retain moisture and cooler soil for azaleas. The best
time to fertilise azaleas is in late spring or after pruning.
After fertilising, add new mulching material.
Uses
Azalea ‘Minitastic’
is a versatile plant that will look equally good planted in
decorative pots as it will in the garden interplanted among
other shrubs to provide contrasting foliage colour, or trimmed
into a formal hedge. As hedging or as trained plants in gardens
or pots, ‘Minitastic’
can be pruned at a height between 15 and 50cm.
