AZALEA 'AUTUMN ENCORES'
Unlike traditional azaleas that flower only for a short period in spring, Encore Azaleas have their peak flowering in autumn, then continue to bloom through winter and into spring. They are free flowering and have attractive evergreen foliage, will perform in sun or shade and are cold and heat tolerant. Different varieties are Autumn Amethyst (Conlee), Autumn Cheer (Conlef), Autumn Coral (Conled), Autumn Embers (Conleb), Autumn Monarch (Conleo) and Autumn Royalty (Conlec). They come in a range of growth habits and flower colours that make them suited to varied uses. More varieties will follow in the years ahead. All varieties are protected by Plant Breeder's Rights in Australia.

Name Image Description
Autumn Amethyst
"Conlee"

Autumn Bravo
"Conlen"
Strong Orange/Red single flowers up to 12mm across. The variety has strong dark green foliage and will grow to 0.75m high and 1m across. The eye-catching blooms add brilliant colour to any landscape.
Autumn Carnivale
"Conlet"
Brilliant mid-pink single flowers. A dense spreading growth habit to 1m high and 1m wide. Heavy summer flowering is typical. It is a real mid-summer traffic stopper. Plant as mass planting or as a specimen.
Autumn Cheer
"Conlef"
Rose pink small single flowers. The most compact of the Encore Azaleas, growing 60cm tall x 1m wide. It’s growth habit and flowers resemble one of its parents, the Kurume hybrid ‘Pink Cheer’, the flowers being slightly larger and deeper in colour. Slow growing and particularly suited to containers
Autumn Coral
"Conled"
Medium-sized coral to salmon pink flowers with fuchsia flecking in the centre. In the U.S. it has been an especially heavy bloomer throughout the summer and autumn. Mounding growth habit to 1m x 1.2m
Autumn Embers
"Conleb"
Deep orange-red semi-double blooms, especially prolific in autumn. Dense, spreading habit and medium growth rate to 1m x 1.2m
Autumn Empress
"Conles"

Autumn Princess
"Roblea"

Autumn Royalty
"Conlec"
Large single rich purple blooms and large dark green foliage on rapid growing tall, upright plants 1.25m x 1.25m. Autumn Royalty is excellent for foundation planting and as a background plant and it makes a fine hedge

Autumn Ruby
"Conler"

Ruby’s deep rose pink double flowers contrast with emerald green foliage and are complemented by an unusual red tinge on new stems. Ruby is an upright grower reaching 1.2 metres, well suited to formal gardens, containers and being clipped as hedging.

The story of Encore Azaleas

Robert E. Lee (no relation to the Civil War general) worked in an azalea nursery when he was in high school, but was employed as a nurse when he started experimenting with a bit of breeding in his backyard. In 1982, visiting a friend in midsummer, he noticed a tray of rooted cuttings of the relatively rare Rhododendron oldhamii in flower. He started hybridising these with traditional spring flowering varieties. This resulted in 7500 plants of different twice-blooming azaleas.

Ten years later Mr Lee turned to Flowerwood Nursery in Alabama to help him select and commercialise the best, and over five years they were narrowed down to six with outstanding growth, flowering, foliage and colour characteristics. More varieties followed, providing a greater selection of bloom colour and plant size. Mr. Lee is still working to develop a wider array of Encore Azalea varieties. Encore Azaleas have been grown and evaluated in 21 public and botanic gardens across the U.S.

Small numbers of the first six varieties were test marketed in the ‘fall’ of 1997, and larger numbers released the following year. In the U.S. Flowerwood Nursery has elevated these ‘azaleas that know no season’ out of the traditional azalea market with special packaging and presentation, brochures and point of sales material. Huge publicity about this new class of plants from garden writers to Wall Street journalists resulted in phenomenal sales.

Encore Azaleas flower on new wood, not on old wood like traditional flowering azaleas. In the United States spring flushes of flower are followed by a period of new growth when new shoots appear. Then plants suddenly stop growing and start setting buds. The ‘first act’ starts when the buds begin blooming in mid- to late-summer. Flowering continues and hits a high note in autumn, stopping only when temperatures drop very low. In spring the flowering cycle starts again.

It remains to be seen exactly when the different varieties stop and start flowering in different locations in Australia. Edward Bunker has grown them for seven years at Redlands, near Brisbane and says: “up here they flower all year round except in the hottest months, and we have found the same in Western Australia”.

Care Instructions

Encore Azaleas have similar planting, watering, and growing conditions as traditional spring flowering azaleas. Plant into well-drained, slightly acidic soil with average soil moisture. Will grow in full sun or where they receive filtered light throughout the day, or morning sun and afternoon shade.

Planting
Encore Azaleas are best planted in autumn when they will be most widely available. Additional organic matter or peat moss worked into the planting hole will prove beneficial, as will mulch. Water Encore Azaleas well when first planted and keep the soil moist until winter. New Encore Azaleas need regular watering until they are established and in periods of drought.

Fertilising
Fertilise Encore Azaleas with slow release fertiliser or special azalea food at recommended rates in spring. Do not fertilise in autumn.

Pruning
Encore Azaleas require very little pruning to retain good form, but can be pruned immediately after spring flowering for maximum bud set. Spent flower removal is not necessary.

Uses

There is an Encore Azalea to suit most purposes and locations. Plant Encore Azaleas in drifts or as specimens in gardens. Autumn Monarch is tall and robust and is suited to background planting; Autumn Royalty is an upright grower that is excellent for foundation planting and for hedging. Autumn Coral is a lower grower with a mounding habit. Autumn Cheer is smaller and slow growing and ideal for container planting. Autumn Amethyst and Autumn Embers have a dense, spreading habit. All grow and flower best on in full sun or light shade. As cut flowers and foliage they will last well over a week in floral arrangements.
