Lobularia Snow Princess
The old fashioned Lobularia or Sweet Alyssum we have known forever is reinvented as a reliable, heat loving and fashionable plant with its large flower heads. Sweetly honey scented and easy to grow in sunny garden beds, Snow Princess will be a winner for reliable and massed displays. Flowering is so heavy it looks just like "Snow at Christmas" in the garden. Garden borders, display pots in outdoor living areas, around pools and barbecues and growing in hanging baskets are just some of the uses of this so well known versatile plant. Unlike the Alyssum we have known and grown Snow Princess is sterile so self sowing is not a problem, all plants of Snow Princess are grown from cuttings.

Origin

Snow Princess is an inter-specific Hybrid and is the result of intensive breeding work by Mr Peter Wicki. Keintzlers and Proven Winners are the appointed world wide agents for the introduction of this plant. In nature Lobularias come from the Mediterranean area and the Canary Islands. The species Lobularia maritima is dominant. As a point of trivia, in early times Allyssum were used in folk medicines where they were regarded as an antidote to rabies.

Care Instructions

What can one write about a plant so well known and so easy to grow. Plants do require high light and as they are such fast growers and heavy flowerers extra fertilizing will be needed every six to eight weeks to keep the plants in strong growth to enable the heaviest flowering. Plants can be cut back if they overgrow the space you have allowed. Pruning to remove up to 50% of the flower and leaf is fine.

Uses

Quoting from "The New York Botanical Garden Illustrated Encyclopedia of Horticulture" we read the following.

"No plant cultivated as a garden annual is easier to grow or more useful for certain purposes than sweet alyssum. As an edging for paths and flower beds and borders, as a low temporary summer ground cover and as a subject to furnish quickly bare spots in the garden with blooming plants it is almost unrivalled".

As the name implies Lobularia maritima Snow Princess is at home where salt laden winds are a problem. In fact if one were looking for a recommended fool proof planting for a novice gardener this would be in the top choices.
